Women's soccer team loses again
The Grizzlies lost the ninth straight this season at home to the winless Golden Eagles of Spalding University. The Eagles were held scoreless the entire season until Sunday’s 3-1 defeat of the Grizzlies.
"We only have 11 players healthy to play today,” said coach Scott Moulton. “Sophomores Syd Surface and Chelsea Parks were hurt along with senior Jessica McElvoy.”
“We have junior Shay Skene in goal for us today,” said assistant coach Justin Sullivan.
“We moved sophomore Jena Elder back to defense to make up for Shay in goal today,” Moulton said. “You will see some offense from us today.”
But the offense Moulton was hoping for never showed up. The Golden Eagles played the Grizzlies with 8 players to the 11 Grizzlies.
The match started off very slow with no action until the 31st minute of the game when the Eagles struck first. Freshman Sara Schuler put the shot past Skene to put the Golden Eagles ahead.
“We should have an even game against Spalding,” Moulton said. “Spalding found the team a year ago and coach Caleb Riley has done a great job with the limited experience.”
“Who ever scores first could possibly decide the game,” Moulton said.
The Grizzlies gave up another goal just two minutes later. Junior Beth Jamison placed the ball past Skene making it the second goal on the year for the Golden Eagles.
“We had eight recruits come to the game and we disappointed them by our play,” Moulton said.
The scoring ceased for the Eagles in the 35th minute. Older sister of Sara Schuler, senior Stacey Schuler added the third goal of the Golden Eagles season of struggle.
The 38th minute ended a 966-minute scoring drought for the Grizzlies off the boot of freshman Sarah Hume. Hume’s goal was set up by freshman Brittany Muston. Hume and Muston are the only two players to put points on the board for the year. The scoring ended at the half.
Moulton was not impressed by the performance he saw on the field.
“I was embarrassed by the lack of effort today,” Moulton said. “I can forgive a loss for effort, but the effort today was gone. We play tougher teams harder then we do Spalding and Anderson.”
The Grizzlies out-shot the Golden Eagles eight to six in the game with 11 players to the Eagles 8 players.
“We gave the ball away 83 times in the entire game, 38 in the first half and 45 in the second half,” Moulton said. “We can’t compete or even win in games like we should with that amount of turnovers. They fought for the ball and played for the ball as we stood there and watched.”
Even though the team broke a 10-game scoreless streak, Moulton still wasn't impressed.
As for the Grizzlies (1-12, 0-4 HCAC), they will make the trip to challenge the (10-5) Millikin University tomorrow afternoon for a 4 p.m. (EST) match.
