Women's soccer team loses 10th straight

By James Hornett, October 9, 2008

The Franklin Grizzlies made the trip to the College of Mount St. Joseph’s for a HCAC soccer contest, Wednesday. The Grizzlies played to a defeat against the Lions 4-0.

The game signified many firsts for the Grizzlies this year. It was the first game under the lights and the first game on turf this year. This will be the only time the Griz play under the lights.

“Tonight the field will play quicker and will have true bounces,” said coach Scott Moulton. “As will there are true bounces, the ball will have better bounces to play off of.”

“We will go back to having one holding midfielder and two central mids,” Moulton continued, “we moved sophomore Syd Surface back to left full back and placed sophomore Jena Elder up top at striker. Freshmen Lauren Hawes and Brittany Muston will play the central mids.”

The Lions (7-3-2, 3-0) remained perfect in the conference allowing no goals in the three contests. The Lions have faced Bluffton and Rose Holman along with the Grizzlies and have scored seven goals in the conference.

“Senior Beth Schuermann and sophomore Ashley Maynard are the leading scorers with 10 of the 16 goals going into the game,” Moulton said. “We need to shut down space and start the game quicker. Both of those ladies aren’t that quick, but have very good touches.”

The match started with a quick score in the second minute by Schuermann. The scoring was halted at one in the first half. The Lions led the shot count six to one. Sophomore Chelsea Parks played tough making five stops in goal.

The second half started in the 51st minute with a goal from freshman Andrea Caldwell. The second goal in the half came two minutes later from the head of sophomore Nikki Jones. Both goals were set up by senior defender for the Mount Jessica Jester.

“The first two goals of the second half were identical,” Moulton said.

The Grizzlies held the Lions for 23 minutes until Schuermann struck again off of a set up by Erin Rosen.

“The first goal and last goal of the game were like the second and third goal, identical,” Moulton said.

In the 83rd minute a scary shin-on-shin collision occurred between Lions player Caldwell and junior Grizzly Shay Skene.

“I’m not sure on the status of Shay, but it will probably be a bone bruise that will be sore for a couple days,” Moulton said.

The game ended with the 4-0 decision with the Lions out shooting the Grizzlies 18-1. The lone shot for the Grizzlies came from the foot of freshman Stephany Derengowski.

“We get behind early and then play great soccer,” Moulton said. “The second half was the same way. The play for the rest of the first half carried over to the second half’s start.”

“We play 80 great minutes of soccer, but have some mental breakdowns which translate to goals,” Moulton said.
