Women's soccer team falls, but shows improvement

By James Hornett, September 11, 2008

Franklin hosted Goshen College Thursday afternoon, but ultimately lost the match, 3-0. This contest was the second game of a three game home stand for the Grizzlies.

“The things we need to work on are our passing and keeping shape,” first-year coach Scott Moulton said. “The mindset and keeping up the pace will be important aspects for the contest with Goshen.”

“They are quick and athletic and have good ball movement between their players. In practice this week, we went back to basics, fundamentals and communication,” Moulton said.

Although the Grizzlies lost, Moulton was pleased with the game play from the team.

“It was a tale of two halves for us today, the first half we played them as we did against Thomas More. The second half was much better and the way we need to play for 90 minutes at a time, and we will be able to turn the corner.”

The Maple Leafs got on the board quickly with a goal from Tahnee Delp in the 10th minute. In the 42nd minute, Hernandez put the ball past Parks to add to the Maple Leaf tally.

Just before the half, Goshen added netted another goal of the head of Liz Nafziger, taking the Leafs to the half up 3-0. Parks faced a barrage of 14 shots from the Maple Leaf attack, while the Grizzlies managed to put up there own barrage of shots that tested senior goalkeeper Emily Gibson.

“The ladies showed their character throughout the game, when they could have just given up. Freshman Lauren ‘Lo’ Hawes ends up taking a beating every game because she ends up taking on ladies who are bigger then her, she is a scrapper, along with the rest of the team,” said Moulton.

The second half showed a new Franklin team who played as a unit and they played the game as if the game had been 0-0. The Grizzlies only managed five shots compared to Goshen’s 16.

The Grizzlies will face 1-1 Illinois College at home on Saturday at 2 p.m.
