Women's soccer goes 0-for-September

By James Hornett, September 29, 2008

The Grizzlies played host to the Eagles of Benedictine University in a non-conference contest Sunday. The Grizzlies dropped their seventh straight decision, 3-0.

The month of September was not good for the women’s soccer team as they could not score all month and allowed 26 goals to get past sophomore keeper Chelsea Parks.

“Benedictine is not a bad team,” said coach Scott Moulton. “Their goalkeeper isn’t big, but she is very quick and agile.”

Benedictine went into the game in a similar situation as the Grizzlies, being they had only won one game and that was the only game they scored in. The Grizzlies are on a month drought of getting shutout since the four goals came on August 31 against Knox College.

“We need to find the combination up top,” Moulton said. “We have left freshman Brittany Muston as our sole striker and have moved sophomore Jena Elder to a center mid and moved freshman Lauren Hawes out to left mid. Lauren does a great job at getting back to help out in the defensive end.”

“We need to finally break through and this season will have a big turn around,” said Moulton. “The women are still motivated and are playing better but we aren’t able to finish.”

“Dani O’Toole is going to be tough to contain,” Moulton said. “She is tough and has very nice touches on the ball.”

The Grizzlies started out slow and took 18 minutes to get the games first action. Freshman Erika Wossner put the ball past sophomore keeper Chelsea Parks in the 18th minute to put Benedictine ahead of the Grizzlies.

“It took 18 minutes before we wanted to actually play and get the ball moving and keeping it in their end,” Moulton said.

The half came to a close with the Eagles soaring with a one goal lead. Parks was hit with seven shots and made six saves. The Grizzlies mustered four shots with two coming from Muston.

In the 55 minute the Eagles put another goal past Parks, this one coming from the foot of freshman Kelli Celmer.

“We had two mental lapses in the second half and that led to their two goals,” Moulton said. The second goal came in the 87th minute off of a shot from freshman Alyssa Rubio. The game ended with a 3-0 defeat to the Eagles which pushed their record to 2-6.

“We had great goal opportunities, which is always a bright spot,” Assistant Coach Justin Sullivan said. “We were one on one with the keeper three times and left with nothing to show for it.”

“Senior defender Katie Hartman played a very good game,” said Moulton. “The majority of the second half was in our attacking third.”

The Grizzlies end September with a 0-7 record and look to October for an opportunity for the next win of the year. The Grizzlies (1-8, 0-1 HCAC) will play host to the Pioneers of Transylvania University Thursday October 2 at 4:30 p.m.
