Women's basketball takes two of three
Women Grizzlies earn spot in HCAC tourney

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin College women’s basketball team pulls out two of three over the past week and a half to assure their spot in the HCAC tournament. The victories were over Rose-Hulman and Bluffton University, while the loss came on the road to Manchester College.
The Grizzlies defeated the Engineers of Rose-Hulman, 62-47 on the Wednesday, January 29.
The Griz came out shooting 32 percent in the first half and went into the locker room up 31-19. Heather Harper led the team with 14 points and two rebounds. Brittney Wilson put in eight.
Monica Schwab came off the bench to contribute three points as well as Monica Planalp and Traci Lippold to round out the scoring. Kristina Appelhans pulled down six of the Grizzlies’ 20 rebounds in the half. Lippold also dished out three assists.
The Engineers were led by Alisa Dickerson with seven points and seven rebounds. Liz Ridgway put up four points and pulled down four rebounds.
The Grizzlies continued to lead wire to wire and came out with the 62-47 victory.
The Grizzlies shot 37 percent for the game on 21-57 from the field. Wilson led the half with 11 points, followed by Harper with six, Jessica Schwartz and Appelhans with four apiece.
Harper and Wilson were the only Grizzlies in double-figures with 20 and 19 points respectively. Appelhans pulled down a game high 12 rebounds of the 42 by the Grizzlies. Lippold dished out seven assists in the game.
The Engineers had two double-double achievers. Dickerson managed 17 points and a game high 12 boards. Donna Marsh came of the bench and achieved 10 points and 10 rebounds. Liz Ridgway nearly pulled off the feat with 10 points and 8 rebounds.
The Grizzlies improved to 11-7 (7-3 HCAC) heading into the contest last Saturday when the Beavers of Bluffton come to town.
The Grizzlies took care of the Beavers to sweep the season series with a 67-60 victory.
The first half saw the Grizzlies shoot 44 percent and trail 32-27 at the half.
The Grizzlies were led by Harper with 10 points and a rebound in the half. Lippold followed with six points, eight rebounds and four assists.
The Beavers were led by Ginny Buckingham and Vicki Auer with eight points apiece. Buckingham pulled down eight rebounds.
The Grizzlies came out hot in the second half and jumped ahead with 13 minutes left. They never looked back.
Harper put up 12 points and added four rebounds to her credit. Lippold achieved a double-double with 12 points in the game and a game high 13 rebounds. Planalp finished with 11 points and Appelhans with eight.
Bluffton cooled off in the half but still saw Buckingham achieve a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Miller and Lewis chipped in 12 points apiece and Miller had 7 rebounds.
The Grizzlies improved 12-7 (8-3 HCAC) on the season heading into Wednesday’s contest with the Spartans of Manchester.
The Grizzlies came up short in there visit, 62-55.
The Griz came out and held a 27-25 lead in the halftime period. Planalp led the charge with six points followed by Wilson, Harper, and Appelhans with 5 points. Appelhans pulled down eight boards followed by Harper with three.
The Spartans were led by Sarah Bose who scored 10 points. Meiklejohn and Bose pulled down 5 rebounds apiece.
The Grizzlies fell behind on the three point shooting which led to the 62-55 defeat.
Harper putt up 15 points and pulled down 5 rebounds. Lippold added 12 points and six rebounds. Wilson rounds out the double-digit scorers for the Griz with 11 points and pulled down 4 rebounds. Planalp put up 8 points followed by Appelhans with 7 points and a game high 15 rebounds.
For the Spartans, Bose had 19 points and 7 rebounds. Meiklejohn put in 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Wilkinson put up 16 points and 5 rebounds.
The Grizzlies fall to 8-4 in the HCAC, two and a half games behind conference leader Anderson University. The Grizzlies get the weekend off but will be back on the court Wednesday. They travel to Lexington to challenge the Pioneers of Transylvania. The Grizzlies have clinched a spot in the HCAC season-ending tournament. Currently the Grizzlies are in the third position and could climb up the ladder if they defeat Transy and win out the rest of the season.
