The Franklin men’s and women’s golf teams competed in the Rose-Hulman Invitational and the Battle at the Brickyard, respectively last weekend. The men finished fourth and the women finished fifth.

The men posted a team score of 636, one stroke behind third-place finisher Anderson University. Transylvania won the event with a score of 613, ahead of College of Mount St. Joseph with 633.

Sophomore Eric Whitaker tallied the Grizzlies’ lowest score with a 145. Junior Justin Ridge, freshman Josh Ross, and juniors Matthew Payne and Matt Hicks finished with 158, 166, 167and 181, respectively.

“[I was] disappointed,” said coach Richard Parks, “We were only one stroke out of third, three strokes out of second. We just didn’t play very well.”
“We’ll have to try some different things to get us going. It has to happen. We’re taking too many strokes to get the job done.”

“Putting and the short game are always vital,” said Parks, “At these two courses particularly, hitting the fairways off the tees makes a lot of difference.”
The women finished fifth out of six teams with a 684 score, four strokes behind fourth-place finisher University of St. Francis.

Lindsey Wilson College finished first with 622, followed by the University of Indianapolis and Marion College with 631 and 671, respectively.

Junior Grace Adams shot lowest Grizzly score with a 168. Freshmen Samantha Marshall and Brittany Brownrigg finished with a 173. Junior Natalie Daugherty shot a 174, one stroke ahead of freshman Brittany Stephens.

“We were the only D-3 school there,” Adams said. “We did really well on the first day, but [on] the second day, it rained. We were disappointed in that.”

The women will host The Franklin College Grizzly Invitational this weekend, while the men with travel to Rose-Hulman to compete in the HCAC Championship.

“We’re looking forward to that,” said Adams. “Hopefully, most of our conference teams will show up. We’ll see how we’re doing against them for next fall.
