The Franklin College Grizzlies women’s cross country team finished sixth out of 15 teams Saturday in the college division at the Gibson Family Invitational.

“It was a good race for us, “said head coach Paul Sargent. “We are gearing up for conference which we have a chance to win, but it will be a tight race.”

The Grizzlies were led by junior Heather Waterman who finished third out of 166 in the six-kilometer race. She finished with a career-best time of 23:06. Her time vaulted her to second all-time in Franklin College history of any women’s 6-K event.

Senior Kristi Brown finished 16th with a career-best time of 23:57, sophomore Shannon Egold was 40th at 24:47, sophomore Holly Hatch finished 65th at 25:44 and freshman Katie Spellman placed 69th with a time of 25:53.

“It was a muddy and sloppy race which does not make for fast racing, but they did a great job at handling it,” Sargent said.

Depauw University, Wittenburg University, and Hope College were all regionally ranked coming into the meet and the Grizzlies beat Wittenburg by five points in the team standings. The Grizzlies also beat conference opponent Manchester College.

“Our women’s team could be ranked in our region next week, which has never happened before,” Sargent said.

The Grizzlies next meet will be Friday at Wilmington College in the Wilmington Fall Classic.
