Waterman earns third HCAC honor this season

By Alexander Swenson, October 9, 2009

Heather Waterman and Natalie Daugherty were named HCAC Players of the Week in cross country and golf, respectively.

Waterman took home the honor – for the third time this season – for her performance at the Greater Louisville Classic. The junior placed fourth out of 298 runners with a personal best 18:45.34 in the 5-kilometer race.

“I am really starting to see all of my hard work from the past month pay off,” Waterman said. “We ran on a great course with a bunch of great teams and great runners, and it feels good to be successful.”

The Grizzlies finished sixth among 35 teams, improving their record to 45-11 going into the Great Lakes Pre-Regional this Saturday.

“No one on our team is afraid of working hard,” she said. “Everyone enjoys running and it’s just a great atmosphere to be a part of. At this stage in the season, we are all very intense and competitive, and that should really help as we try to repeat as HCAC champions.”

Daugherty earned the title by medaling in the Lady Grizzly Fall Invitational last Sunday. The senior is the second Grizzly golfer in a row to receive the award. Sophomore Brittany Stephens won last week’s award.

“I was only four-over par going into the last four holes, and then ended up being ten over on the day. I thought I had bombed it,” Daugherty said. “Then as the rest of the scores started coming in, I knew I had a chance. It really is an honor to be recognized as the golfer of the week.”

The 82 score earned Daugherty her second medalist honor, and first low medalist honor, of her career. It also led to a first-place team finish and their first title since October of 2007.

“It was a much needed win for us. I feel like I have gradually been getting better all year, and that I am just now reaching the peak of my career. I know the rest of the team feels the same, and that is really big for us going into the conference championship.”

The Grizzlies, now 36-20 overall, will take part in the HCAC Championship this weekend at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky.
