Waterman continues top five streak

The Franklin College cross country teams raced in the Little State division of the Indiana Collegiate race at Indiana State University.
The women’s team finished fifth out of 14 teams with 145 team points, while the men faltered with a 10th place finish and 241 team points.
“It was the highest placing for the girls at the meet. We were the second D-III school, only Depauw beat us and they are nationally ranked, said head coach Paul Sargent.”
Junior Heather Waterman led the women Grizzlies with her third straight top five finish. She finished fifth with a time of 19:18.
Senior Kristi Brown was 16th at 20:06, sophomore Shannon Egold placed 30th at 20:43, freshman Katie Spellman was 45th at 21:18, and sophomore Holly Hatch finished 49th at 21:28.
On the men’s side it was junior Jake Hojnacki who led the Grizzlies with a 12th place finish at 27:05.
Unfortunately for the Grizzlies, Hojnacki was the only top 40 finisher.
“I look for how we compare against other conference teams not where we finish, said Sargent.
Sophomore Jay Druba finished 44th at 28:22, senior Scotch Swango finished 55th at 28:57, freshman Brandon Litz was 61st at 29:12, and junior Jacob Cross placed 69th at 29:38.
“Only two guys, Jake and Scotch, had run this meet before, said Sargent. There is a learning curve there, but we are better than what we showed.”
The Grizzlies next race is the Greater Louisville Invitational on October 3rd.
