Volleyball wins among mayhem

By Monica Harvey, October 9, 2009

Somewhere between recognizing Franklin seniors and the mobs of pink, the Grizzly volleyball team beat Manchester College in five games on Wednesday night, 3-2.

The Spartans took the first two games (25-20, 25-13), but Franklin came back to capture the third and fourth games (25-21, 25-22), drawing a decisive fifth game. Game 5 went back and forth, staying close, throughout. The Grizzles outlasted Manchester, 15-13, giving Franklin the match, 3-2.

“I’m very excited for the girls,” said head coach Lori Wilkerson. “I thought that they did a good job even after being down of coming back and fighting hard.”

Senior Maryellen Hole and junior Kayla Lewis led the Grizzlies in kills with 10 each. Lewis led with 30 digs and sophomore Tyla Warner tallied 16. Sophomore Chelsea Caldwell had 36 assists and went 13-for-13 serving, with one ace.

“It was definitely nerve-racking but it was great” Hole said.

Sophomore Amanda Dickman led the Spartans in kills with 13, while freshman Katie Miller and junior Christa Peden each put up 12. Dickman tallied eight blocks, while Miller and Peden added six and four, respectively. Dickman also had three aces. Junior Lauren Nash led in assists with 40, while freshman Brooke Waddups posted 19 digs.

Seniors recognized at the game were players Anna Iacobazzi and Maryellen Hole, as well as athletic trainer Luke Mehringer and team manager Lauren McCombs.

“I’ve never been more excited in my college career, I can’t explain it” Iacobazzi said.

Pink-Out night – which was sponsored Zeta Tau Alpha – was to raise awareness for breast cancer. The Zetas came to the game dressed in pink for a cause and to cheer on the Grizzlies. Some of the events included recognizing survivors, a silent auction for a set of Breast Cancer ribbon cornhole boards and signing a banner in memory of those who have had breast cancer.

The Grizzlies travel to the College of Mount St. Joe’s to take on the Lions on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
