Where Franklin gets its sports

Volleyball falls to 2-7 after loss to Marian

By Erik Kenny, September 10, 2008

After playing at the Kalamazoo Invitational and Hanover Invitational the past two weekends, the Grizzlies (2-7) returned home for thir first home match of 2008, but were swept in three games against Marian College.

“Playing at home is more fun than away games because it’s better for the team since there are more people cheering for you than booing,” freshman outside hitter Tyla Warner said.

Franklin lost in three games 23-25, 24-26, 9-25 but held a late lead in the first two games before relinquishing the lead to the visiting Knights (5-5).

In the first game Franklin found themselves ahead 23-22 before allowing three straight points as Marian stole away the win. The second game featured the Grizzlies jumping to an early 7-3 lead and holding it late in the game. With Franklin up 19-16, there was a controversial call when the ball landed just inside the line and the home team was awarded the point. Marian players and coaches protested, but after a few confusing moments, Franklin kept their point and played on. Looking to capture the sweep, Marian came back to score 10 of the next 14 points to take the second game 26-24.

“Those first two games were really close at the end but we just couldn’t finish the job and get the win. That’s the biggest difference between an experienced team and young teams like ours, the girls don’t have the confidence yet to stay focused and grind it out till the end,” Coach Lori Wilkerson said.

The third game was close with Marian holding a slim 10-6 lead but youth played out as the Knights stormed away with a 25-9 blowout win. The Grizzlies had also had a few controversial calls about balls getting hit out of bounds and getting tipped that led to six Marian points that could have possibly gone to either team.

“The calls that didn’t benefit us in the third set should not have changed the outcome but situations like those are what separate an experienced team from a young one,” Wilkerson said.

The team plays next at Wilmington on Thursday.

Colts Coverage?
If TheFranklin sends Dert to Indy to cover the Colts, I believe it would be an excellent idea for him to take his father along.

Great story, Dewey. It would have been an even better story if your team had won, but I understand that Manchester's team is 9-1 this year. I hope you can cover it when we beat you all! Muhahahaha! Have a good night DERT!!!
