Strack drives Franklin to come-from-behind HCAC win

By Zach Ruark, April 15, 2010

A Paul Strack ninth inning single led to the winning run in Franklin’s 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Anderson University. With the win, the Grizzlies improve to 16-7 (6-2 HCAC) and first place in the conference, while the Ravens – losers of four straight – drop to 16-11 (7-4 HCAC).

The Ravens struck first when Drew Kidd flew out to center field, scoring Brett Detty, who was on third after a single of his own. Brady Roundtree, who doubled to put Detty on third, scored on a single by Chris Jarrett, who eventually scored on a single by Garrett Stone.
Despite outhitting the Grizzlies 11 to eight, the Ravens were plagued by errors, committing five to the Grizzlies’ one. Three of Anderson’s errors were from Stone, an outfielder, including the throwing error that allowed the final Grizzly run.

In the bottom of the fourth, junior Ian Sanders – who reached first and eventually advanced to third on an error – scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Alex Boone. Junior Matt Zmich – who walked and advanced to second on a sophomore Jordon Klinedinst – scored on a single by freshman Nick Stoia to bring Franklin within one, 3-2.

After two scoreless innings, the Grizzlies struck again in the seventh. After hitting a single, junior Jordan Smuts reached third on an error and scored on a Strack single to tie the game at three.

Strack, a senior, struck again in the bottom of the ninth, after a scoreless eighth inning, with the final hit of the game, scoring junior Cody Nees on a throwing error.

“Individual stats are good, but the team [win] is what matters,” said Strack, who led the Grizzly offense, going four for four from the plate with an RBI.

Sophomore Shawn Mattingly gave up three runs, nine hits and a walk, while striking out two batters in seven innings pitched. Nees got the win, though, after taking over in the eighth and holding the Ravens scoreless for the final two innings. He gave up just two hits and no walks, while improving to 2-1.

“Our pitchers did a good job of keeping the game under control,” Strack said.

Jarrett led the Raven attack, going three for four from the plate with an RBI. Nate Clem, Detty and Roundtree each went two for four for the Ravens.

Greg Vogt gave up three runs, seven hits and a walk in seven innings pitched. He struck out seven Grizzlies.

Brad Schnepp – who pitched relief for the Ravens during the eighth and ninth innings – gave up one run on one hit, one strike out and one walk, dropping his record to 1-5.
The Grizzlies travel to Transylvania this weekend, where they take on the Pioneers on Friday at 4 p.m and Saturday at noon.

“I’m expecting a hard-fought game. All conference games are tough,” Strack said.
