By Jake Meiners, September 15, 2009

The Franklin College women’s golf team finished fifth among nine teams in the 2009 Hanover Invitational Tournament, with a score of 686. The 36-hole tournament wrapped up, September 13, after the final round closed at Shadowood Golf Course in Seymour, Indiana. Marian College took the team championship, posting a score of 635.

“The team agreed our weakness was in our short games. As a team, we had hoped to start our season off a little stronger, but we now know what aspects we need to work on and improve,” said Grizzly freshman Brittany Stephens.

After the first round, played September 12, at Sunrise Falls Golf Course in Madison, Indiana, Franklin was fourth with a combined team score of 341. Centre College (KY) held first place after scoring 320.

Freshman Brittany Stephens (Whiteland, Ind./H.S.) led the Grizzlies individually with an 80 in the first round. That score was enough to tie her for fourth. In the second round she scored an 83. The combined total, 163, placed her sixth for the tournament.

“My own personal goal this season is to have an average around 80,” said Stephens.

Junior Natalie Daugherty (Vevay, Indiana/ Switzerland County H.S.) finished the Hanover Invitational after firing 83 and 86. Her total of 169 gave her 13th place.

Freshman Avery Brown (Greenfield-Central, Indiana/H.S.) shot 178 over the two-day event. Her two scores earned her 18th in the Invitational.

Sophomore Brittany Brownrigg (Littleton, Colorado/ Columbine H.S.) and senior Grace Adam (Ossian, Indiana/ Norwell H.S.) shot 180 and 181 to finish 23rd and 24th, respectively.

Angela Gauck (Marion University) reported a 149 and won individually in the tournament. She was two shots back after the first round and ended up the second round winning by five strokes. Gauck and three other Knights of Marion shot under 80 in the second round. Marion set a new school record, 635.

The Franklin Grizzlies next event is the Transylvania Invitational on September 16th.
