Sophomore Sensation

Whitaker leads golf team and more
By Audrey Price, April 24, 2009

Sophomore Grizzly golfer, Eric Whitaker, says he doesn’t remember much about when he started playing golf, “…except for that I was terrible.”

As this week’s HCAC Player of the Week and a medalist at last weekend’s Rose-Hulman Invitational, Whitaker has come a long way since “terrible.” The youngest of three boys, he started golfing at the age of 13 with his father, Phil, who taught all of his sons to golf.

“It was something we could do together,” Whitaker said.

After learning how to play, Whitaker golfed for his high school, North Putnam. He also played football and basketball, before golfing at the collegiate level for Franklin.

Whitaker is a business major, and is currently following the accounting tract, but will soon be switching to financing/marketing. He is also a member of the F.C. Business Club. In his spare time Whitaker likes hanging out with friends from the golf team—they even put together an intramural basketball amongst themselves. He also enjoys just being outdoors, and visiting state parks, such as Turkey Run.

As a Coatesville, Indiana native, Whitaker appreciates the feel of Franklin, “…it’s a small atmosphere, you know more people,” he said.

In the future, Whitaker plans to become a finance/market advisor. As for golf, he says he would like to continue and maybe play in tournaments one day—after having received the instruction of role model and assistant coach, Roger Lundy.

“I came to have him help me and hopefully take it to another level,” said Whitaker.

The men’s golf team will next be competing this weekend, April 25th and 26th, in the HCAC Championships in Terre Haute.
