Softball to start season in Georgia
By Brittany Muncy, March 4, 2010
The softball team travels to Savannah, Ga. today to play in their first games of the season. With a new head coach and goals of making the HCAC Tournament, the Grizzlies are ready to start the season on a high note.
Heather Watson – who had been the assistant coach for the past two years – has taken over as the new head coach. She said she is looking forward to accomplishing a lot as a team this year and having a winning season.
“I think it has been really good,” said four-year senior Brittany Pullen. “She is really organized and really cares how I feel about everything. It has not been that different because she has been the assistant coach for the past two years now.”
Coach Watson has had the team practicing early mornings to prepare for the season ahead, but because of the weather they have been forced to practice indoors. Not having practiced outside could hurt the Grizzlies as they go on the road.
“We will travel to Savannah, Ga. this Friday without ever stepping foot on a ball field,” said Watson.
Despite the weather issues, the women still have their heads up and are prepared to have a great season. They have a lot of goals this year and especially want to make it to the conference tournament.
“I think we’re all trying to set a new tone for Franklin College softball and get a lot more wins this season,” junior Jordan Tichenor said.
“We have a very young team, I believe we have six or seven freshman on our squad and only two seniors — who are fighting injuries,” Watson said.
Franklin also has some returning talent, though. Senior Tracey Smith – who had a school record 51-hit season last season – was named to the All-HCAC Team at the close of the season. Senior Jennifer Pogue was named to the HCAC Honorable Mention list, while Tichenor set a school record with 20 RBIs.
The Grizzlies take on Chattanooga in the first game of their doubleheader on Saturday at 4 p.m., followed by St. Johns Rivers at 6 p.m.
