Softaball frosh earns HCAC honor

The Grizzly softball team won two of eight games over spring break – bringing its record to 6-14 (2-4 HCAC) – with wins over Centre and Defiance Colleges. Franklin lost to Adrian College and Bluffton University twice each and Centre and Defiance once.
"Every team has their peaks and valleys and to be honest, spring break was a valley," head coach Heather Watson said. "The girls did spend a lot of time together."
Watson said the Grizzlies’ young roster has played a role in the lack of victories this season, but will prove beneficial in the future.
"We’re learning how to work together now and we’re working out the kinks," she said. "We’re an extremely young team, which will work to our advantage."
Stephanie Beasley – one of three freshman starters – was named HCAC Hitter of the Week for her contributions to the Grizzlies’ victories from March 21 to March 27.
"I felt really honored and it was great to be recognized in the conference," Beasley said.
Beasley hit two home runs en route to finishing the week 4-for-9 (.444 BA) at the plate. She crossed the plate four times and tallied four RBIs.
"It’s not very often that you have a freshman contribute like she has," Watson said. "Overall, she’s a fantastic player … She’s only going to get better … Right now, her contributions are purely talent-based, but I’m looking forward to [her future leadership presence]."
Beasley and the Grizzlies host MacMurray College in a double header Saturday at 4 p.m. before traveling to Rose-Hulman and Saint Mary’s, where they play double headers at 1 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, respectively.
"The main goal for our season is to go out and play the best we can and play as a team," Watson said.
