Soccer squads kick off home slate Sunday
Going into the weekend of their home openers, both the men’s and women’s soccer teams sit at 1-1 after the first weekend of the season.
The two also share common opponents for their first home games of the season Sunday afternoon: Thomas More College.
It was two freshmen midfielders who gave the women’s team its first victory in two seasons. Freshman midfielder Brittney Muston scored a hat trick – two in the first half against Knox College, while classmate Sarah Hume added the Grizzlies last goal. Muston and Hume also added an assist each in the 4-3 victory. First-year coach Scott Moulton, who was hired in the offseason after the team finished the 2007 campaign winless, picked up his first victory in two games.
The team was shutout 2-0 in its first of two on the Illinois road trip by Eureka College.
The men kicked off their season in Pennsylvania with a 2-1 victory against Philadelphia Biblical University on Aug. 29. An unassisted goal by sophomore forward Grant Krevda sealed the season-opener after freshman midfielder Sinjin LaBonne scored the first goal of the season for the Grizzlies in the first half that tied the game.
Two days later, the team suffered a 6-1 defeat to Capital University. Senior forward Michael Harwood scored Franklin's lone goal.
The men also will take on Wilmington College Saturday on the road before coming home.
The women’s team plays first Sunday starting at 3 p.m., with the men’s contest scheduled two hours later.
