The Franklin men’s soccer team tied Earlham College 2-2 in two overtimes at home on Wednesday evening. The tie brings the Grizzlies to 2-5-1 and the Quakers to 4-2-2.
The game was Franklin’s third to go into overtime. The first two resulted in the Grizzlies’ only two wins.
It was Earlham’s fourth overtime game of the season and the Quakers were 2-0-1 in their first three. All four of the Quakers’ overtime games have lasted two extra periods.
Earlham took control early and scored the only goal of the first half.
The Grizzlies countered in the second half as a sophomore Sinjin LaBonne header tied the game at one a piece. LaBonne’s goal was his fourth of the year.
Later in the half, the Grizzlies countered an attack by the Quakers and Ray Pena put the ball into the net, grabbing his second goal on the year and giving the Grizzlies a 2-1 lead.
The Quakers answered right back, capitalizing on a penalty in the box, which gave them a penalty kick two tie the game at two.
Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie and neither team was able to score in either overtime.
“We play close with them throughout the game and the ending result being a tie,” assistant coach Justin Sullivan said. “In overtime, no one got any great chances and no goals were scored.”
Coach Mahoney was unavailable for comment.
The Grizzlies started the season off with a two-game skid, losing to Maryville College (3-2) and Trine University (2-0).
Both junior Drew Brown and senior Grant Krevda scored against Maryville, while sophomore Craig wood had an assist.
Franklin ended the losing steak with a 4-3 overtime victory over Eureka College, before losing two more to DePauw University (1-0).
LaBonne scored twice in the win over Eureka, while Pena and freshman Andreas Kapsalis - who also tallied an assist - added a goal each.
The Grizzlies then lost to Millikin University (3-2) and Thomas More College (5-1).
Kapsalis and Labonne each put one in the net against Milliken, while freshman Ryan Sullivan had an assist.
In the loss to Thomas More, Kapsalis assisted freshman Danny Ax for the Grizzlies’ only goal of the game.
