Ravens complete season sweep

By Matt Muncy, February 16, 2010

The Franklin College Grizzlies fell to the Anderson University Ravens for the second time this season and dropped their second straight game by 20-plus points with their 80-58 loss on Monday.

The Ravens (19-2, 11-1 HCAC) scored the first basket of the game for an early 2-0 lead before sophomore Clay Starrett knocked down a three to give the Grizzlies (8-13, 6-6 HCAC) a 3-2 lead with 19:40 left to play in the first half.

It would be their only lead of the game.

Head coach Kerry Prather sees a perfect storm between lack of depth, inexperience, toughness, and a tough league.

“We are just stuck right now. We have to play so hard to be competitive and we don’t have enough guys right now to get enough rest to play as we need to play.”

The Ravens tied the game and then retook the lead on a layup by Ty Riddle. Franklin tied the game at 5-5, but could not get string together enough possessions to make a difference.

The Ravens lead was small throughout most of the first half, the highest being six points a couple times, before their offense took off.

With 6:29 left in the half, Anderson took an eight point lead that quickly grew to 14 and they held a 12 points lead at halftime 40-28.

The second half was much of the same struggle for the Grizzlies.

“We had six straight stops in the start of the second half and did not covert hardly any of them,” said Prather.

A layup by sophomore Zach Merschbrock brought the Grizzlies deficit to 13, but they would get no closer.

Anderson pushed the lead to 20 and won the game by 22.

The Grizzlies shot well, 49.1% for the game, but the Ravens shot 65.2%.

Franklin went 2 of 13 from three point range and 4 of 11 from the free throw line, while Anderson shot 5 of 13 from behind the arc and 15 of 22 from the charity stripe.

The Grizzlies were led by Merschbrock who scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds while sophomore Will Conoley added 14 points and four rebounds.

Brock Morrison scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the way for the Ravens.

Franklin travels to Hanover College Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
