Hojnacki, Waterman lead way for Grizzlies
The Franklin College Grizzlies men’s and women’s cross country teams both had top ten finishes in the Greater Louisville Classis Saturday. The men’s team finished ninth out of 33 teams and the women’s team finished sixth out of 35 teams.
Head coach Paul Sargent said the teams had a great day even though the course was a little slower due to the rain and wind.
The men ran an eight-kilometer race at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park. They finished with a team score of 304 points.
Junior Jake Hojnacki finished 18th leading the Grizzlies with a time of 26:31.50. Senior Scotch Swango placed 45th with a time of 27:04, sophomore Kinley Weber finished 76th at 27:28, and followed by sophomore Jay Druba in 118th place with a time of 28:02. Junior Jacob Crow was 144th at 28:25, freshman Brandon Litz was 145th at 28:25, and Junior Kevin Martin finished 166th with a time of 28:50.
On the women’s side, the Grizzlies finished with a team score of 231 points in the five-kilometer race.
The Grizzlies were led by junior Heather Waterman who finished in fourth place with a time of 18:45.34. The time was a personal best for Waterman.
Senior Kristi Brown placed 37th with a time of 20:06, sophomore Shannon Egold finished 65th at 20:40, and junior Carmen Alejo finished 74th with a time of 20:51. Freshman Katie Spellman finished 99th with a time of 21:13, sophomore Holly Hatch placed 108th at 21:20, and junior Caitlyn Croan finished 183rd at 22:32.
“It was Carmen’s first race coming off her injury,” said Sargent. She is still working herself back into shape, but it gives us a little depth.”
The next race for the women’s team is Saturday, October 10th, in the Great Lakes Pre-Regional at Indiana State. The guy’s team has the weekend off.
