Hanover heartbreak

Grizzlies come up short in OT
By James Hornett, February 22, 2009

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The women Grizzlies suffered a heartbreaking defeat Wednesday to HCAC rival Hanover College on the hardwood. The game was tied at 76 as time expired. Hanover took the victory with two free throws from Freshman Abbey Schmahl in overtime, 88-86.

The loss puts the Grizzlies into a tie with Manchester College for fourth place. Due to the tiebreaker, Manchester would get the fourth seed due to their victory over Transylvania University earlier this season.

In the scenario, Franklin would travel to take on the Spartans in North Manchester Tuesday. The Grizzlies would need a victory over Defiance and a Rose-Hulman upset over Manchester Saturday.

The Grizzlies ended the first half with a six point lead, 39-33 over the Panthers.

The Grizzlies had production coming from the starters and the bench. Senior Stephanie Radtke came off the bench and put up 11 points on 3-of-3 from behind the three-point arc. Heather Harper and Brittany Wilson contributed 8 apiece followed closely by Traci Lippold with 7 points. Harper grabbed 4 of the Grizzly 21 rebounds. Wilson and Lippold each had three assists in the half.

The Panthers had7 points from Torin Franz and 6 apiece from Micah Whitted and Holly Vogel. Rachel Walters, Vogel and Molly Martin grabbed 4 rebounds apiece of the 20 in the half.
The Grizzlies were unable to hold the lead and allowed 43 Panther points to tie the game at 76 at the end of regulation.

The Grizzlies had 11 points from Lippold and Harper in the half. Wilson added 7 points. Kristina Applehans and Jessica Schwartz grabbed 4 rebounds apiece of the Grizzlies 15 in the half. Wilson and Monica Planalp had 4 assists apiece.

The Panther attack was led by Rachel Walters with 14 points followed by Torin Franz. Lacey Holliday off the bench added 8.Walters grabbed 7 and Vogel grabbed 6 rebounds respectively of the 25 in the half. Schmahl and Vogel matched Planalp and Wilson with 4 assists apiece.
The bonus period saw Lippold with 4 points and two points from Harper, Schwartz, and Wilson.
The Panthers period went better with 4 points from Schmahl, Walters, and Franz to take the Panthers out of the regular season with a home game scheduled for Tuesday against Bluffton with a Manchester loss.

The Grizzlies will need a Manchester loss to have a home game on Tuesday. It is a battle for a home game before the trip to Anderson or Lexington, Ky. The Grizzlies will either play Manchester if the Spartans lose to Rose-Hulman. If the Spartans defeat Rose-Hulman, then Manchester would win the tiebreaker and host Bluffton. Hanover would play Franklin in Hanover if that were to happen.

The Grizzlies take the court on Saturday at 2 p.m. for Senior Day recognizing Stephanie Radtke as the lone senior this season. The Grizzlies play host to Defiance.
