Grizzly tennis continues hot start
By Alexander Swenson, September 22, 2009
The Franklin College Grizzlies women’s tennis team defeated the visiting Anderson University Ravens 6-3 Saturday at Custer Baker. The victory improves the Grizzlies to 4-1 in HCAC competition and 4-2 overall this year.
The Grizzlies were led on the day by a pair of juniors, Kayli Schafer and Chelsey Gott, as well as freshmen Adrian Gillaspy and Rain Tuley, all of whom picked up individual wins in straight sets.
The Ravens got off to a quick start, with sophomore Alex Hammel defeating junior Morgan Bright 6-1 6-2 at number one singles, followed by AU senior Jessie Rigby taking down FC freshman Heather Pasek 6-0 0-6 (10-7) in a hard fought match at number two singles. But following those two losses, the Schafer, Gott, Gillaspy, and Tuley came up big at three, four, five, and six respectively, needing only the minimum eight sets to take the four matches.
Hammel and Rigby continued their strong showing as the number one doubles team, defeating Bright and Schafer 8-3, but that is the last taste of victory the Ravens would have for the day. Pasek and Gott took down Becky Curtis and Katie Porter 8-2, while Gillaspy and FC freshman Caitlyn Miller finished things off with an 8-1 win over Sarah Buck and Nicole Miller.
The Grizzlies will look to keep their HCAC success rolling next weekend with two matches Saturday at Custer Baker. FC will face Rose-Hulman (6-2 overall, 4-1 HCAC) at 9 A.M and Hanover (4-3 overall, 3-2 HCAC) at 2 P.M.
