Offensive lineman recieves awards

Before the Grizzlies kicked off their 2009 campaign with a 38-31 win against Baldwin-Wallace Saturday, it received many preseason accolades this summer. In addition to being picked to repeat as HCAC champions, the team was ranked 19th in the preseason Division III Top 25.
Offensive lineman Chad Schenkel garnered several individual awards including preseason All-American. The junior, who has started every snap of his college career was also named All-North Region second team and All-HCAC first team. He is also one of four Grizzly captains..
“Chad Schenkel is one of the smallest lineman that you will see play football at the college level, but his heart and determination is what separates him from others,” head coach Mike Leonard said.
As a sophomore, Schenkel helped the Grizzlies to an 11-2 record, the most wins in school history, their second consecutive HCAC title and an eighth place ranking in the final D3football.com poll in 2008. That offense finished fourth in passing, sixth in total offense, and eighth in scoring in Division III football. Franklin advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division III playoffs for the first time.
“Chad is extremely smart, quick, and very competitive. His ‘bulldog mentality’ from snap to whistle is what makes him so good. He means a great deal to our offense and team,” Leonard said.
While Schenkel said he appreciates the recognition, he gave some of the praise to his line mates.
“It was nice to be recognized, but being an offensive lineman, I feel that named an All-American is a direct reflection on the offensive line,” Schenkel said. “Our offensive line is All-American, not just me.”
Schenkel said he wants to help the team return to the national playoffs for the third straight year and leave the field with no regrets.
“Franklin football is so special because it is a family atmosphere. I couldn’t see myself playing anywhere else, he said. “The coaches are amazing and the program is heading in the right direction.”
