Grizzlies show improvement

Beat Trine but lose three more
By James Hornett, October 2, 2009

The women’s soccer team – with a 1-0 loss at Anderson University -- Wednesday afternoon – stands at 2-7-1 (0-1 HCAC), a record that has already bettered last year’s win total of one. Franklin is 1-3 over the past week.

The Grizzlies lost 1-0, 2-0 and 4-0 to Anderson University, Earlham College and Manchester College, respectively. They also beat Trine University, 2-0.

Freshman goalkeeper Sara Perry stopped nine shots in the loss to Earlham on Tuesday. Freshman Ikumi Doucette and junior Lauren Berry scored the unassisted goals for the Quakers. The Grizzlies did not take a single shot on goal, while the Earlham posted 13, but head coach Scott Moulton said he was happy with team’s effort.

"The girls played fantastic and are playing the game the way the game should be played," he said.

"Our defense is coming together and we have some more things to work on, but I am happy with the game play. Their two goals came off of a great shot from 18 yards out and the other on a free kick."

On Sunday, the Grizzlies earned their second win of the season – their first on the road with a 2-0 victory over Trine.

Freshman Cortney Harth contributed her sixth goal of the year in the 25th minute of the match. Freshman Abbie Goss scored her first goal of the year in the 82nd minute assisted by sophomore Sarah Hume. Freshman goalkeeper Amanda Welches tallied 12 saves on the day.

"This is probably the best game we have played," Moulton said of the win.

The previous day, The Grizzlies lost their HCAC opener at home to the 2008 HCAC tournament runner-up Manchester, 4-0. Welches recorded 10 saves on the day.

Freshman Laura Jenkins scored two goals for the Spartans, while seniors Allison Moore and Paige Koomler added one each. The Spartans posted 14 shots on goal, to Franklin’s four.

The Grizzlies return to action Saturday at 2 p.m., when they take on Bluffton University at home.
