Grizzlies look to continue winning ways
By Zach Ruark, April 23, 2010
The Grizzly softball team (13-15, 4-6 HCAC) plays Wilmington College (12-16) today without centerfielder and second hitter Tracey Smith. After losing their only centerfielder to a broken hand, the Grizzlies will look to freshmen Amanda Leming and Alli Mitchell to lift the team offensively.
“We have one of the best hitting teams our program has seen in years,” head coach Heather Watson said.
Leming is currently leading the team with a .420 batting average, closely followed by Mitchell, who has recorded a .384 average.
“Coming into the season I set high goals for myself, and I’m on my way to making them,” Leming said.
Wilmington will carry its 5-7 road record into the matchup to challenge Franklin’s 5-3 home record.
Wilmington owns a .264 team batting average, compared to Franklin’s .308.
Pitchers Kayla Bachek (3-3) and Jordan Tichenor (3-4) are expected to take the mound for the Grizzlies.
“If we all hit the way we are capable of we will win,” Leming said.
Having already split a double-header earlier this season, the team will face Hanover (8-28, 0-8 HCAC) on Saturday.
“We intend to throw our faster pitchers against them,” Watson said.
The Grizzlies will pitch Adrianne Wray (3-3) in the first game and Allison Mitchell (4-8) – coming off a shoulder injury – in the second.
The host Grizzlies take their 5-3 home record into senior day against Hanover’s 2-8 road record.
The Grizzlies will look to take advantage of Hanover’s .254 team batting average.
Hanover and Wilmington have driven in just 91 and 92 runs on the season, respectively, to Franklin’s 133.
Franklin’s offense will look to take advantage of both teams pitchers who have given up a total 19 (Hanover) and seven (Wilmington) home runs this season. Franklin has hit a total of 10 home runs on the season.
“If we play grizzly ball, we will win,” said Leming.
