Grizzlies look for redemption Monday

By Brittany Muncy, March 11, 2010

The Grizzly softball team looks to rebound from 11-6 and 10-2 losses to Milligan College and King College, respectively on Monday with a doubleheader against Greenville College at 3 p.m. The loss drops Franklin to 1-7, while Greenville stands at 0-2.

“Well we have a lot of injuries that we have to nurse so now a lot of our talent is going to lie in our younger girls,” head coach Heather Watson said.“We are going to take what we learned in Savannah and come up with the best lineup we can.”

Sophomore Kelsey Whitson currently leads Franklin at the plate with nine hits and a .429 batting average on the season. Freshman Stephanie Beasley has the highest slugging percentage (.684) and leads the Grizzlies in RBIs (5), total bases (13) and home runs (2). Freshman Allison Mitchell, senior Brittany Pullen, and junior Melanie Rausch have a home run each.

The Grizzly pitching staff has a combined 8.74 ERA.

“I definitely think my batting was pretty strong, that is what we have been working on the most since we have been practicing indoors,” Beasley said.

In the 11-6 loss to Milligan, freshmen Mandy Lemming and Allison Mitchell led the Grizzly offense going two-for-four from the plate and posting two runs and an RBI each. Beasley hit two-for-four with one run and sophomore Kelsey Whitson added two RBIs and two hits – in four at-bats – and a run.

Camille Olvey led the Buffalo offense with three hits, three runs and an RBI in five at-bats. Eight different players crossed the plate for Milligan.

As a team, Franklin posted six base hits to Milligan’s 15, but committed just two errors to Milligan’s four.

Milligan’s Ryann Musick earned the win giving up three hits and two earned runs in 2.1 innings pitched. Musick struck out two batters and walked none. Mitchell struck out four batters and gave up 15 hits, seven walks and 11 earned runs in the loss.

“We did the best we could with what we had, basically the first game was our practice,” freshman Stephanie Beasley said.

Senior Tracey Smith went two-for-three from the plate to lead the Grizzly attack in the 10-2 loss to King. Whitson and junior Jordan Tichenor each scored a run for Franklin. Junior Chelsea Greene and sophomore Ashley Burton each tallied an RBI.

Stephanie Mueller and Emilee Edleman led the Tornado attack, going three-for-three from the plate with five hits and two RBIs, respectively. Mackenzie Draine scored three runs and Shauna Haga, Aubree Hutt and Megan Lilley each added two.

King’s Samantha Watts earned the win, striking out six batters and walking two in five innings pitched. Tichenor recorded the loss, giving up seven hits and six walks in three innings pitched. She struck out two batters.

Franklin tallied seven hits and two errors to King’s 12 and zero.

“I think we played extremely well,” Watson said. “Most teams have been playing for a couple months now. As a whole for having an extremely young team and never stepping foot on a field, we played well.”
