Grizzlies drop two

By Matt Muncy, March 10, 2010

It was a rough weekend for the Grizzlies as their first home series of the year had to be moved to Mason, Ohio due to the Grizzlies’ field still being wet.

The Grizzlies took on North Central College in a double-header on Sunday and fell short in both games, 4-2 and 4-3.

“We did not play as well as we are capable,” said Franklin coach Lance Marshall.
Franklin (2-2) had a rough start to game one. In the first three innings they amassed zero runs, three hits, and six men left on base while North Central (2-0) scored one run on two hits and left one man stranded.

Matt Zmich doubled to center in the top of the bottom of the fourth and then scored on a single by Jordan Klinedinst to get the Grizzlies on the board. North Central added two runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead back 3-1.

Zmich and Klinedinst were at it again in the eighth as Zmich tripled and Klinedinst drove him in to bring the Grizzlies within one, but North Central scored a run in the ninth and allowed only four Grizzlies to the plate in the bottom half.

The Grizzlies finished with 14 men left on base.

“We had many opportunities that we squandered,” said Marshall. “We didn’t execute very well.”

Luke Meghringer threw six innings giving up five hits, two walks, nine strikeouts and one earned run and received the loss for the Grizzlies making his record 1-1 this season. Nathan Ellis closed out the game striking out four and giving up two hits.

Mike Kloss earned the win for North Central after throwing 5 2/3 innings, gave up seven hits, one earned run, four walks, and struck out ten Grizzlies.

Klinedinst led the Grizzlies with three hits and both RBIs while Zmich had a double and triple, Ian Sanders had two doubles, and Jordan Smuts had two singles.

Brennan Hagensee finished with three hits and two RBIs for North Central and Matt Burke had three hits and one RBI.

In game two Franklin jumped on North Central with a run in the first inning as Jarrett Johnson scored on a ground out by Sanders. North Central scored in the fourth inning to tie the game, but Franklin answered in the bottom of the fourth as Alex Boone reached first on an error and then scored on a double to left field by Zmich.

North Central scored in the fifth to tie the game 2-2 and then again in the sixth to take the lead 3-2. In the ninth inning North Central scored another run to go up 4-2 and the Grizzlies were only able to get one run across while leaving two men on base.

“We got to a good spot with a man on first and third and couldn’t get that last hit,” said Marshall.

Shawn Mattingly earned a no-decision after pitching five innings and giving up two earned runs while relief pitcher Brett Andrzejewski got the loss for the Grizzlies after pitching one inning and giving up an earned run. Cody Nees pitched the final three innings and gave up one earned run.

Sanders led the Grizzlies with two hits and one RBI. Nick Stoia and Zmich each had one hit and one RBI and Smuts finished with one hit.

For North Central Nick Robinson led the way with two hits and one RBI.

The Grizzlies welcome Adrian College to John P. McDowell field Friday and Saturday. The game Friday is at 4 p.m. and 12 p.m. on Saturday.
