Grizzlies continue HCAC competition

By Matt Muncy, April 23, 2010

Franklin College will try to maintain pace with Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference leader Rose-Hulman this weekend as they face off against Mount St. Joseph.

The Grizzlies will host the Lions in a three-game series Friday and Saturday at J.P.McDowell field. This will be the final home series for the Grizzlies and Saturday will be Senior Day.

“We are looking to play well,” said Franklin College coach Lance Marshall. “We are looking forward to our final home series.”

Franklin College is currently 18-8, 8-3 in the HCAC where they are currently second. Mount St. Joseph is 15-4, 5-6 in the HCAC and in sixth place.

Alex Boone leads the Grizzlies on the offensive side of the ball with a .437 batting average. He has 45 hits, nine doubles, six homeruns, and has driven in 38 RBIs while striking out only two times in 103 at-bats.

“He has been consistent all year,” said Marshall. “He has been swinging the bat well for the last 20 or 22 games. He is having a terrific season.”

Jarrett Johnson is batting .326 with 21 hits, six doubles, three homeruns, 21 RBIs, and 25 walks. He has also struck out 31 times in 95 at-bats.

For the Lions Josh Denny is batting .362 with 34 hits, 10 doubles, two triples, and two homeruns. He has driven in 16 RBIs and has been walked 14 times. His teammate Matt Flamm is hitting .330 with 34 hits, 11 doubles, a triple, and two home runs.

On the defensives side, Grizzlies Luke Mehring is the go to pitcher with a 5-2 record in eight games. He has a 3.00 era in 51 innings. Opponents have collected 51 hits, and 17 earned runs. Mehring has struck out 38 batters while only walking nine.

“Luke is the leader for us,” said Marshall. “He is a terrific competitor and leader. He will fight tooth and nail.”

On the Lion’s side Brandon Bouley is their number one pitcher. He is 6-1 in eight starts with a 2.86 era in 50.1 innings. He has given up 41 hits and 16 earned runs while striking out 43 batters and walking 15.

These three games are pivotal for the Grizzlies as they have nine games left – all conference games – before the HCAC tournament and they sit a game and a half behind Rose-Hulman for first place in the conference.
