The women’s basketball travelled to Mount St. Joe and beat the Lions 76-65 on Wednesday to tie Transylvania for first place in the HCAC. The win improves Franklin to 18-6 (12-3 HCAC).

“We are on the verge of winning conference for the first time since I’ve been here, it’s very exciting,” said junior Brittney Wilson.

A win in Saturday’s matchup would clinch a first-place tie for the regular season conference title and the No. 1 seed in the HCAC Tournament.

“If it all goes our way we should be able to pull out the conference championship and host the tourney here at Franklin,” freshman Melissa Eades said.

Sophomore Sarah Condra led the Grizzlies in scoring with 18 points – including three-for-three from three-point range – while senior Traci Lippold added 17. Brittany Sparks and Chelsey Doellman dropped nine each for the Lions.

Franklin shot 45.6-percent from the floor as a team – 52.0-percent in the second half – while Mount shot 34.3-percent—with just 27.8-percent in the second half. Rebounds were almost even as Mount racked up 42 boards to Franklin’s 41.

Juniors Wilson and Monica Planalp dished out eight and five assists, respectively, to lead the Grizzlies. Kat O’Neill had five assists for Mount. Jessica Prewett grabbed nine rebounds for Franklin, while Doellman led Mount with seven.

Franklin hosts Defiance College for Senior Day on Saturday at 2 p.m.

“We have set ourselves up for the win, we have the opportunity to do well and I think that’s all anybody can ask for” said head coach Kim Eiler.
