Condra named HCAC Player of the Year

By Bryan Ault, March 11, 2010

Sarah Condra said winning the HCAC Championship “made a name” for the women’s basketball team.

Condra certainly made a name for herself by winning the 2009-10 HCAC Player of the Year. She shot shot 76.8 percent from the free-throw line and  40.3 percent from three-point range during conference play on route to averaging a team-high 16.8 points per game.

“I’m very proud,” Grizzlies head coach Kim Eiler said. “It’s well deserved and well-earned. As a coach, it’s nice to see one of your players get rewarded.”

Condra said she was “shocked at first” when she received the award.

“I didn’t think I would win it, but I was very excited,” she said. “I’m proud of myself for putting all of that work in to get it.”

Condra didn’t play as a senior in high school. Preparation for the memorable season that came started last summer.

“I took two years off because I didn’t play as a senior in high school,” Condra said. “I had to get back into the swing of things, and it all started from our summer workouts.”
Eiler said meshing Condra’s skills with the personnel the Grizzlies already had played a crucial role in Condra’s success.

“Since she was a first year player for us, it was us getting her back into the rhythm of her game,” Eiler said. “It was also our team being able to meld her talents with what we already had. It was getting that team chemistry going.”

Eiler also said one player’s reward is a result of a total team effort.

“When you have the player of the year, it’s not the one person, but definitely a team effort,” Eiler said. “When you look at the success of this year’s team from top to bottom, that has made us successful.”

Condra is not resting on her individual accomplishment. She says she hopes the Grizzlies repeat as conference champions and make it back to the NCAA tournament in 2011.

“We are only losing two seniors,” Condra said. “We have four of our returning starters coming back, so, next year, we should definitely make it back.”
