Baseball falls to ranked foe

Franklin led No. 11 Adrian College late at home on Saturday, but couldn’t hold on as they lost 8-7.

Neither team scored until the top of the third inning when Adrian hit in four runs. Franklin followed them with a run of their own. In the fourth inning both teams scored one run, putting the score at five to two, Adrian’s lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Franklin put up two more runs on a two run single from Jordan Klinedinst cutting the lead to one.
 
“We fought and played with a lot of heart coming back from five to one,” Coach Lance Marshall said.
 
Franklin took the lead in the seventh inning when Alex Boone hit a two run homer and Klinedinst another RBI single, lifting the team to a seven to five lead.
 
“After being in a slump last week, it felt good to hit a homerun,” Boone said.
 
In the eighth inning, Adrian tied the game at seven. At the top of the ninth, Cody Nees walked Adrian’s eighth run across the plate and the 8-7 score stuck.
 
“We’re a team to be reckoned with,” Marshall said.
 
Franklin had a total 12 hits and six runs batted in. Both teams had two errors. Franklin threw two pitchers while Adrian threw five. Team leaders were: Alex Boone who went three for four with three runs batted in and one walk; Nick Stoia went two for four with one walk; Jordon Klinedinst went two for five and three runs batted in. Franklin pitchers struck out a total of eight batters while Adrian’s had seven. Luke Mehringer threw the first seven innings giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks.
 
“Both our pitcher did a great job,” Marshall said.
 
Cody Nees came in to close the last two innings allowing three runs on four hits and three walks. Both pitchers had four strikeouts.
 
Adrian’s pitcher Ryan Dornschot threw the first five innings allowing two runs on five hits, two walks, and had four strikeouts; Josh Burd came in the sixth inning giving up two runs on three hits, one walk, and no outs; Sean Hartman came in relief in the sixth and pitched the first out of the seventh inning, he gave up three runs on three hits, one walk, and no strikeouts; Craig Steadman received the win pitching the last two batters of the seventh and the eighth inning, he gave up no runs on only one hit, three walks, and one strikeouts; Dan Welch got the save pitching the ninth and final inning giving up no runs, no hits, no walks, and no strikeouts.
 
Adrian players had a combination of 13 hits, seven runs batted in, and eight runs. Team leaders were: Nate Sarkissian who went two for three with one run batted in and one walk; Andrew Anderson went two for four with one run batted in; Alex Cowart and Jake Cappelletty both went one for four with two runs batted in; Brian Bilius three for five; Cody Meyer two for four and one run batted in.
 
The Grizzlies travel to DePauw University to face the Tigers Sunday March 14.
