Where Franklin gets its sports

Ahead of the pack

Welti well on his way
By James Hornett, May 7, 2009

“I was forced by my coach to come for an overnight visit to Franklin College,” said senior cross country and track & field star, Brandon Welti. “My coach, Todd Yates, graduated from here and wanted me to come, so I visited once, met some of the runners and fell in love with this place.”

Welti is from Sunman, Indiana and a graduate of Milan High School.

Welti is currently a secondary education major with a Social Studies endorsement. Welti is also currently teaching at Indian Creek Middle School. Also, Welti is still involved with Track & Field, running the 10,000 and 5,000 meters with two meets left in his collegiate eligibility.

The future looks bright for Brandon as he plans to run in mini and full marathons competitively as well as teach.

“I have two minis in June and August and a full in October that I plan to run,” said Welti. “I have a job already lined up at South Putnam High School upon graduation and my goal is to not lose it,” continued Welti.

When not in the classroom or on the track, Brandon can be found at Starbucks reading. “I could simply spend hours their reading.”

Also, Welti spends a lot of time planning lessons for teaching. “My favorite classes were African-American History with Dr. Witzig and Russian History with Dr. Gawthrop.” According to Welti, both classes had a lot of reading assaignments and gave him a reason to go to Starbucks.

“My schedule is pretty routine and as I read the Bible after I get up, go to teach at Indian Creek, come back for practice, spend hours reading and planning lessons and then going to sleep,” says Welti. “I am usually up by 5 a.m. and in bed by 9 p.m. as I want to get enough sleep to feel rested for running and teaching.”

Welti is a four-year member of the track & field and Cross country teams. Brandon was named to this year’s All-HCAC team and received the HCAC Most Outstanding Track Athlete in the 2008. Welti was also a four- year member of the All-HCAC team for Cross Country and finished 196th in the 2008 Division III Cross Country Championships being only the second runner from Franklin to go to the Cross Championships.

Welti is also a member of the Theta Alpha Kappa religious Honor Society, where he serves as president. Welti is a member of an Honor Society for Athletes with a 3.4 GPA or better and is also a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

Welti received a bid to compete in the Division III Track & Field Championships coming up in two weeks in Marietta, Ohio.
