New Jackson film captures last days of musical star
I don’t care what anyone says, Michael Jackson was a genius. In the past, I wouldn’t be comfortable taking such a bold stand on such a controversial figure. Normally, I would have rather debated abortion or the death penalty, but after seeing "This Is It" this past weekend, I stand firm on my opinion. I entered the theatre knowing there are three schools of thought when it comes to Jackson. First, some see him as a musical god who can do no wrong. Second, there are those who view him no different than the child-catcher character from "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." If you don’t understand this reference, do some research on YouTube, you’ll catch my drift. Third, there are people who simply appreciate the man’s music but don’t care to delve into his personal life. I did -- and still do -- fall into the latter. You won’t see me trekking to Jackson’s grave site to weep at his mausoleum, but I’m not going to write him off as a pedophile who shouldn’t be respected. I’m just in it for the music. And he made some great music. "This Is It" shows off the career that Michael Jackson had. The film takes footage of rehearsals for Jackson’s final tour, which was supposed to launch in London. It’s simple, raw and spectacular. Viewers are treated to a backstage look at the last performance of one of the greatest performers ever. What’s really amazing to see is the sheer talent of Jackson. He actually sings while he’s dancing. Imagine that, no lip-synching. Perhaps Britney Spears and Lady Gaga should have a watch, just so they can see that it can actually be done. The point is Jackson knows music. He coaches the background singers and musicians in order to perfect the songs. He won’t settle for less than the best. The songs are the classics we all know, but people were still physically moving to the beat like they’d never heard them before. It was a cool experience. The last time I got the chills so often was when I worked at Dairy Queen. But when "Man in the Mirror" was rehearsed, it’s possible that I turned into a solitary goose bump. There couldn’t have been a better ending. If you’re skeptical, don’t be. "This Is It" is legit.
