Editorial: Voters need to make own choice on Election Day

By Editorial Board, April 25, 2008
After Tuesday’s Pennsylvania primary, the nation turned its attention to Indiana and its upcoming May 6 primary date.

Along with it came the massive efforts of both Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama. For the next week and a half Hoosiers will be bombarded by both candidates and their campaigns.

This includes a plethora of celebrity endorsements for both Clinton and Obama.

In fact, it was a Clinton campaign worker who put The Franklin in contact with actor Sean Astin of “Rudy” and “The Lord of the Rings” fame.

While campaign messages will come from celebrities, voters of all ages, but especially the young vote, shouldn’t hinge their candidate preference just on their favorite actor’s or singer’s opinion.

We don’t think the celebrities would even want us to.

Celebrities who chose to endorse candidates said they did because they agreed with the candidates policies and stances on the issue.

Astin has his real reasons for supporting Clinton, he didn’t just pick her name out of a hat.
He cited her experience and accomplishments  as first lady and in the Senate as reasons she’d make a good President.

Non-famous voters, us included, should make their choice the same way. So while you may be swayed to vote a certain way because of celebrity endorsements, vote for someone because you think that they should be the next president based on their merits, not who stands next to them on the stage.
