Supporters celebrate historical Obama victory

INDIANPOLIS – Though Jill Long Thompson failed early Tuesday night to unseat Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels, the crowd at the downtown Marriott Hotel had plenty to cheer about as president-elect Barack Obama kept winning states en route to becoming the nation’s first black president.
As Obama won Virginia, Illinois, New York and so on the crowds grew louder and louder with excitement, often with chants of his name.
Stacia Morgan, the Indiana Obama Campaign “Faith-Based” captain said she has worked to get people to the polls and was excited Indiana voted for a Democratic presidential candidate for the first time since 1964.
“I’ve been fighting back tears because this is history in the making. I’ll be in tears, if Indiana ever turns blue,” said Morgan, who got her wish when the final votes finally came in.
As Ohio was called in favor of Obama there was celebratory dancing and more chanting of Obama’s name. Indianapolis resident Diana Broadia was one of those said she was greatly excited when they called Ohio in favor of Obama. She said she trusts Obama to put the country back in order.
When Obama was projected the winner, the crowd cheered, cried and jumped for joy. The popular “Yes we can” chant morphed into “Yes we did” Cree Harris called it “probably the most incredible moment of my life.”
For Brian McNair-Williams, Obama’s pending presidency meant he finally understood what is it felt like to be included, a sense he didn’t know he lacked until he realized Obama’s victory.
