Senate leaves steel options open

INDIANAPOLIS--The Indiana Senate opposed an amendment to Senate Bill 382 Tuesday to only use Northwest Indiana’s steel companies to construct the proposed Illinois-Indiana toll road.
The amendment was authored by Sen. Karen Tallian, D-Portage. It failed, 32-17.
Tallian said she supported the amendment on behalf of her location in Northwest Indiana. Northwest Indiana native, Sen. Ed Charbonneau, R-Valparaiso, opposed the amendment.
“To start off a project by giving this steel preference isn’t the way to start off a partnership with Illinois,” said Charbonneau.
In 2006, a motion to have Indiana steel used ont Interstate 69 in Indiana was defeated.
