Same-sex marriage ban passes Senate
INDIANAPOLIS--Senate Joint Resolution 13 – the proposal for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex unions in Indiana -- passed out of the Indiana Senate Thursday.
It now moves to the House of Representatives.
The amendment would put language in Indiana’s constitution so that both same-sex marriages and any kind of civil union would not be recognized as a marriage.
Sen. Carlin Yoder, R-Middlebury, sponsored the resolution and said it has withstood in at least 30 other states’ constitution.
“The traditional definition of marriage is extremely important in Indiana,” said Yoder.
Sen. Vi Simpson, D-Bloomington, spoke against the amendment and said not recognizing same-sex marriage is not the conservative way and says it is discriminatory.
“What happens in someone else’s home, someone else’s doctor’s appointment, someone else’s life has nothing to do with mine,” said Simpson
