Incumbent Buell retiring, new rep. for District 89
The Indiana House District 89 race guarantees that the voters will put a new face into the Statehouse following the retirement of longtime representative Lawrence Buell.
The race pits Democrat John Barnes against Republican Chris Swatts.
If elected into office, Barnes said he would work to fight for jobs on the East and South sides of Indianapolis, create a smaller, more efficient and cost-effective government, provide property tax reduction for senior citizens and make sure schools are accountable while recognizing that students are more than a test score.
Barnes said, “I’m a local citizen who is concerned about his neighborhood and wants to make a positive difference.”
Swatts said he would work to target state funding to local communities to improve business areas, create an education reform and eliminate crime.
“I am confident that with hard work and a true commitment to change we can overcome the challenges facing the east and southeast sides of Indianapolis,” he said.
While neither candidate is an incumbent each is familiar with the world of politics. Barnes ran in the same district two years ago against Buell, who has represented the district continuously since 1992, his second stint in office. Swatts has been involved with politics since 1997. He said he has the experience needed to run a successful campaign.
Swatts has received endorsements from U.S. Rep. Mike Pence and President of Community Heights Alliance Scott Armstrong. Although his opponent has received endorsements from local politicians, Barnes said he has worked hard to campaign throughout the entire district.
While Marion County has typically voted Republican, it has been become more Democratic in recent years.
