Editorial: Time to examine lack of spring breaks
By Editorial Board, March 28, 2008
After weeks of waiting, it’s only hours before everyone finally goes on spring break. We all understand that it may not make sense to have spring break in early March like many of Indiana state colleges because of how winter term affects our spring.
Registrar Brooke Worland said the faculty votes on the academic schedule every year, and that since she’s been here at Franklin, no one has seriously challenged the timing of spring break.
She also explained that the college’s spring break is set up to be the same as area schools, though it’s doesn’t always work out. This is good for both faculty and students who have family who are still in school, especially since Franklin draws in many of its students from the local area.
However, look at the spring schedule compared to the fall. The fall is filled with breaks, while this one-week break is the only one we’ll enjoy this spring.
We are spoiled in the fall. Not only do we get both Thanksgiving and a fall break, we aren’t even in class for Labor Day.
This spring we didn’t even get an extra day for Easter, even though the school is Baptist.
Students complain that our spring break isn’t with any other colleges. That’s not true--the University of Delaware and San Diego State among others share our late date—but that’s hardly their point.
Seeing your friends go off to the beach whilebeing stuck in the middle of a two-month stretch of classes will make anyone moody.
Even many of the professors seem to be more than ready for an overdue break.
Maybe it’s time the faculty look at adding another day off, or even moving spring break to the middle of the semester.
