Wall brings light on alcohol dangers

By Suzannah Couch, October 29, 2009

The Residence Life Department joined students and their dinners on Thursday night by setting up the Alcohol Awareness Wall that was created to advise students on the repercussions of using alcohol irresponsibly.

The wall was put together for National Collegiate Alcohol Week and included pictures of young people who were either hurt by or involved in alcohol-related accidents. Students could see first-hand alcohol’s harmful potentials. The wall also included statistics and studies that have been done about alcohol abuse.

Residence Life was also giving away free drinks to students and were on hand to advise students on how much alcohol they pour when they pour one drink. Students could also use goggles that simulated being under the influence of alcohol while playing a Wii racing game as a way to depict how problematical it is to drive under the influence.

“[The purpose of the Alcohol Awareness Wall is] to give students the tools so they can make healthy and smart decisions in regards to alcohol and as well as other things.” Jennifer Culver, Elsey Hall coordinator, said.
