The Franklin wins regional award
The Society of Professional Journalists recently awarded The Franklin with a mark of excellence for its work in 2009. The Franklin won third place last month for best all-around non-daily college newspaper in Region 5, which includes Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.
The Loyola Phoenix of Loyola University Chicago won the region and the College Heights Herald, the campus newspaper at Western Kentucky University came in second.
Director of the Pulliam School of Journalism John Krull said the award was especially impressive because the region is full of many strong journalism programs and Franklin is one of the smaller ones. He said the staff award was gratifying because it’s proof of good teamwork.
“We have won, over the past two or three years, a boatload of awards for individual achievements of our student journalists. This is one that demonstrates our student journalists don’t work in isolation,” said Krull, who also serves as an adviser to The Franklin.
The overall category was the only one The Franklin entered.
Krull said the award is a cumulation of the staff’s work throughout the years.
“We consistently have found ways to build upon success,” Krull said. “Every year the staff of The Franklin makes it a little bit harder for the next staff to top them.”
