The Franklin endorses three for executive board

By Editorial Board, April 20, 2010

Vice President

When seeking political office, experience is vital. It can make or break a campaign. That’s why The Franklin is officially endorsing freshman Matt Brems for Student Congress vice president.

The two candidates only have three semesters of experience between them, and Brems has one year of it. But he really stands out with the things he has done in that time.

Brems has served as the freshman class representative, publicity chairman, student liaison to the security committee and has worked on the academic affairs and finance committees.

Brems has promised to create “honesty and openness” between Student Congress and the student body. He plans to do this through continuing with coffee chats and events similar to these.

These qualities make Brems the best candidate for vice president.

Secretary

There’s a big difference between levels of experience in the candidates for secretary. One has two years of experience, while the other has less than one. That why junior Katie Holland, who has two years of experience, deserves to be the next Student Congress secretary.

She has served as the at-large representative, judicial board chief justice and a member of the budget committee.

Holland said she believed the role of secretary was the make sure people are doing what they’re supposed to be doing. She’s helped to create an accountability plan this semester to ensure everyone can get involved with Congress.

She’s pushing Congress in the direction it needs to go, and she’ll do well as secretary.

Treasurer

Experience can be helpful, sometimes a youthful outlook is needed. This is the case in the race for treasurer.

Though he’s only in his first semester on Student Congress, sophomore Darrel Feltner has big ideas for changes.

His opponents have said everything with the budget process has gone smoothly over the past few years. But Feltner has said the system works well, but can still be worked on.

He has done work for the finance committee and has knowledge of what goes on with the budget process.

His youth and willingness to change make him the candidate who should be treasurer.
