Students take part in weight contest

By Mitch Waldroup, March 5, 2010

Partnership for Johnson County kicked off the New Year by encouraging people to make good on a common resolution: becoming healthier through a program called Dump Your Plump.

Partnership for a Healthier Johnson County is a non-profit organization based in Franklin. The organization promotes health awareness and has been running Dump Your Plump for quite some time.

Dump Your Plump is a weight-loss program that is used in workplaces across the country. The program promotes weight-loss and fitness by focusing on healthy habits, such as exercise and nutrition.

Dump Your Plump is used in businesses, communities and organizations whose employees or members have the desire to develop a healthier lifestyle. The program is done in teams and each member sets goals dealing with weight loss and weight balance.

The program started in January and lasts 10 weeks. There are four student teams on campus. There are two teams with members from Delta Delta Delta and there are two other teams with members from Zeta Tau Alpha.

Senior Amanda McIntosh is the captain of one of the teams from Delta Delta Delta. McIntosh dealt with Partnership many times while working for AmeriCorps last year.

"Partnership does so much for Johnson County, and I thought we should get involved too." she said.

Each team has a different way of trying to achieve their goals. Some teams might have a very strenuous workout plan; some teams will not be as demanding.

McIntosh’s team tries to exercise a few a times during the week.

"Our goal is for every member on our team to exercise five days a week for 30 minutes a day," McIntosh said.

Each member who participates in the program receives a manual on nutrition, weight-loss and exercise.
