Self-defense 101

Franklin’s women gather together to learn how to protect themselves during dangerous situations
By Rachel Friedman, May 1, 2009

Jay Hunsucker, adjunct physical education instructor, taught a self-defense course to about 50 women Wednesday night in the fitness center for Johnson Dietz’s hall program. Johnson Dietz resident assistants, sophomores Whitney Howard, Katey Humphries and Kayla Cash supported the event.

“We thought this would be a great program to bring to the students because we are a small community, but that doesn’t mean we won’t ever be in these situations,” Cash said.

Hunsucker teaches jiu jitsu and self-defense at Franklin College. He started the program with some helpful information. He said the one thing he wanted everyone to remember is to keep out of dangerous situations and always be aware of their surroundings.

After he gave some tips to keep safe, Hunsucker began to demonstrate self-defense moves in case the women ever were in trouble. He applied a lot of the situations that women could find themselves in on a daily basis.

Hunsucker demonstrated the moves on students that he had in previous self-defense and jiu jitsu classes.

The women paired up to perform self-defense moves on each other with the help of Hunsucker’s students.

In the fall, he will teach a women’s self-defense class twice a week.

“It’s important for all girls to have an understanding of self-defense,” Hunsucker said.

Hunsucker has three daughters that go to Purdue University, and even though they’ve never been in a bad situation, he said it hits home that they could be at some point.

In his classes, Hunsucker has his students doing a lot of ground work so there is a lot of repetition and the moves become second nature to the students.

“It’s intense,” Hunsucker said. “Students either love the class or they hate it.”
