"Poetry in Music" takes Custer theater stage

By Steffane Christian, April 8, 2009

The FC Singers and Women’s Ensemble filled Custer theater with “Poetry in Music” Wednesday evening.

About 50 to 60 audience members came to watch the performers sing six songs produced by writers such as William Shakespeare and the Song of Solomon.

Approximately two-thirds of the audience was made up of older members which seemed to be family.

John Hostetter, for instance, came with his family to see his daughter Jackie, who is a senior in high school. He said he only gets to see her perform two to three times a year and this was a great opportunity to come.

There are twenty-three choir personnel that participated in “Poetry in Music.” Conductor Natasia Sexton Cain said this was their way of “celebrating April as poetry month.”

The singers had piano accompaniment by Beth Houston , an oboe supplement from Regina Bollinger, and Rachel Konchinsky-Pate on tambourine. Some of the performance, however, was done acappella, using only voices.

“I thought it was a pretty solid performance,” freshman singer Brandon Clark said, “We all had a lot of fun, the women’s ensemble did very well, and I think we kept the audience engaged.”

All in all the performance went well and was a nice contribution to the celebration of poetry month.
