Man vs. Food challenge students at First Friday event

By Kati Graber, March 6, 2010

The Man V. Food challenge, hosted by the Elsey Hall resident assistants, tested the stomachs of seven teams against food. It seemed the food even beat the winners.

“We’re never eating again,” said winning team member freshman Jesse Wilson. Team member sophomore Kraig Shutters agreed.

The rules were simple: finish the food without vomiting. The seven groups started with four bowls of orange Jell-O. The last two teams to finish were eliminated, and the remaining five teams moved on to the next round.

Round two consisted of six peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. One group couldn’t finish their sandwiches in time.

Round three was six hot dogs and buns. This proved to be the most difficult for the teams. Each team started to bring out their strategies to try and beat the others. The competitors tried to psych out their opponents with noises. They squashed their bread together, ate the hot dog and bun separate, and dunked the bread in water to make it go down faster.

In the end, only one team finished the hot dog round. After the forfeit of one team, the others slowed their pace. Only one team finished.  The other two teams could not beat their time constraints. With only one team remaining the final round, pizza, would not be taking place.

Wilson and Shutters’ strategy was simply to swallow it and not chew. It proved effective and they walked away with a gift card to Mi Pueblo.

As to not waste the pizza for the final round, resident assistants sophomore Ryan Hendryx and junior Seth Fleming challenged Wilson and Shutters to eat half a pizza. Wilson and Shutters’ stomachs and jaws just couldn’t work fast enough, and the RAs won the challenge.
