women's soccer moving in right direction
By James Hornett, September 18, 2009
The Grizzlies women’s soccer team has come out with a new ball of fire and has already bettered last season’s record of winning just one game, against Knox College. Well the women have come out with a new attitude and sit with a 1-3-1 record in the first two weeks of the season.
The Grizzlies opened up this year with a game against Know College on September 5. The Grizzlies got started early with a 5-2 victory. Freshmen Cortney Harth and Natalie Downs got the season started with all five goals. Harth setting a record with 4 goals on the season and Downs getting the other goal. The woman turned around the next day and play host to Eureka College. The game went into overtime where Eureka took the game 2-1 from the Grizzlies. Downs was the scorer in the game. Cortney Harth was named the HCAC Player of the week for her contributions in the opening weekend of the season.
The Griz traveled to Terre Haute to take on St. Mary of the Woods where the Grizzlies were upset 3-2. Downs and sophomore Lauren “Lo” Hawes contributed the two second half goals on September 9. The Grizzlies made a trip to Illinois to take on Illinois College and Millikin College on September 12 and 13. The Grizzlies played Illinois College to a 1-1 tie after the two extra periods. Harth scored the lone Grizzly goal. Millikin took the Grizzlies in a 6-0 game.
The Grizzlies will play the next two games on the road as they travel to Ohio to take on Hiram College and Oberlin this weekend before they open the conference season. The Grizzlies are looking to better their last place season last year and prove the HCAC poll wrong as they were picked last this year in the conference tournament. Hiram and Oberlin are games that begin at 1:00 p.m. Coach Moulton was unavailable for comment on his team’s play thus far.
