Tri-Delts Lounge for Life on campus

Isaac Daniel / The Franklin
By Isaac Daniel, September 11, 2008

Franklin College sorority Delta Delta Delta took to Dame Mall at 7:30 a.m. Thursday in efforts to acquire donations for St. Jude's Children Research hospital.

Kristin Howard, Tri Delta's Philanthropy chair and junior, organized the event. The concept of the fundraiser is "Lounging for Life."

The Tri Delts planned to lounge well into the evening until rainfall accompanied them around 4:30 p.m. The goal to raise as much money as possible for the children's hospital research was successful with a total of $588 raised. $212 of that came straight from the pockets of the campus community as they walked pass the lounge area outside the Napolitan Student Center, and $376 came from sorority members buying T-shirts.

The shirts were ordered through St. Jude and sold to add to the cause. The sorority placed lounge chairs, a boombox, water jugs, blankets and tables on the Dame Mall lawn. Atop the tables where Tootsie Rolls, cups for drinks and see-through buckets displaying the cash collected. This is the first year Tri Delta sponsored Lounging for Life.

Editor's Note: This story was updated to reflect the correct spelling and title of philanthropy chair Kristin Howard.

A Few Comments
The women of Delta Delta Delta have been very dedicated to their philanthropy, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Their philanthropy (not philanthropist) chair, Kristin (not Kristen) Howard developed the idea of Lounging for Life and did a remarkable job of putting everything together on what turned out to be a great day for the event, rain or shine. I still donated to their charity, as I always do every year, whether the donation bucket was see-through or not. That information, I think, was irrelevant to this story. I think the women deserve more credit than what this article gave them. In Mr. Daniel's case, a cartoon would have been suitable.

It's great that franklingrizz thought so highly of Tri-Delta's philanthropy. It was a fun event, and Kristin Howard indeed deserves praise for all the work she put into organizing it. However, FG’s comment was simply over the top. This was a news story. FG should walk down to Shirk Hall and ask an Intro to Mass Media student the difference between an editorial and a news story. I’ll save him or her time: Journalists report the facts in news stories and opinions in editorials. This isn't an editorial, so it was the writer’s professional duty not to lavish praise on the sorority. He just needed to state the facts, which he did. The donation containers were see-through and displayed the money that the women raised. This is a fact, so Mr. Daniel wrote it in his news story. The women of Tri-Delta were proudly displaying the generous gifts from the campus community. This, while true, is an opinion, so Mr. Daniel could not write it in his news story. It’s true that Mr. Daniel is The Franklin’s resident cartoonist, but with such a small campus it’s often necessary for students in any campus group to pull double duty. While in Shirk Hall, FG should also ask the professors how many mistakes they made during their early writing careers. It’s so unfortunate that FG was so pleased with Tri Delta’s event, because all that comment did was distract from an article that announced a highly successful philanthropy event.

It's funny how you didn't cover your grounds. Not only were you lucky enough to fix mistakes noticed by others but you still have some. Tri Delta does not hyphenate between the two words. As a journalist are you not suppose to double or even triple check your work?
