Grizzlies top Hanover

Franklin back to winning ways
By James Hornett, January 23, 2009

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin Grizzlies came off two losses last week to get back on track in the HCAC with an 86-71 victory over the Panthers of rival Hanover College.

“We had a tough week and had two ways to come off the tough week,” said Head Coach Kerry Prather. “We had to choose whether to panic and get scared or come out calm and play our game. We learned from are problems at Transylvania and Defiance and came home and this was a big win for us.”

The Grizzlies came out hot shooting 52 percent in the first half and closed the half with a 42-32 lead. Senior Jared Catron and Dustin Marshall led the charge with 10 points apiece followed by freshman Will Conoley, who added nine.

Sophomore Mitchell Meyer led Hanover with 10 points followed by freshman Mike Case with 8 points.

The second half saw the Grizzlies stay hot shooting 54 percent. Clayton Starrett came off the bench and dropped 3 three-pointers on seven attempts and led the charge with 11 second-half points. Marshall also added 11 and freshman Zach Merschbrock and senior Jared Catron added seven points, respectively.

Hanover was led by sophomore Billy Pappas and Meyer with 8 points apiece. Junior Jake Inman added seven and sophomore Taylor Dial added six.

The Grizzlies and Panthers saw four double-digit scorers respectively. The Panthers had Meyer (18), Dial (12), Pappas (12), and Mike Case (12).

The Grizzlies were led by a game-high 21 from Marshall, Catron with 17, Starrett with 11, and Merschbrock with 11.

Marshall also pulled down seven rebounds and Conoley had six. Marshall added six assists and senior Jace Redman pulled down six.

“We played with a lot of composure and discipline,” Prather said. “Hanover is a quiet defensive team and quiet defensive teams are the most troublesome for many teams.”

The Grizzlies travel to Anderson to take on the co-leading Ravens. This will be a men’s-women’s doubleheader with the men playing the 3 p.m. contest with the women slated for 1 p.m.

“We will have our hands full on Saturday. Anderson is a deep, athletic, and will be a challenge playing in Anderson,” Prather said. “We will have to prepare, stay rested and stay sharp and we will be ready for Saturday.”
