By Matt Muncy, May 8, 2009
The Franklin College Grizzlies continued their HCAC dominance with a first round victory over the Anderson University Ravens, 12-5.
“We played pretty well. We swung the bats well and pitched well,” said head coach Lance Marshall.
The Grizzlies jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after the first inning. The Ravens scored one run in the second to cut the lead to one.
In the fifth inning, the Grizzlies offense woke up. They scored five runs off of five hits including a solo homerun by senior Joel Chrobak, which put them up 8-2.
Both teams scored a run in the sixth and then three in the seventh and three in the eighth. With the Grizzlies up 15-9, Franklin College brought in senior Marcus Larson to close out the game.
Junior Luke Mehringer started on the mound for the Grizzlies. He pitched seven innings, gave up four hits, six runs (four earned), walked one and struck out six. It was his eighth win of the season.
“Luke is a great competitor. He was injured last year and has come back at full strength and pitched very well,” said Marshall.
Junior Cory Wahl led the way offensively going 3-4 with four RBIs. Sophomore Ian Sanders was 3-6 including a solo homerun in the sixth inning. Senior Lance Noel had three hits as well including two RBIs.
Franklin College will play Rose-Hulman game at 12:30 p.m.
